Deepak Bista (Nepali: दीपक विष्ट) (born 02 July 1976 in Kanchanpur, Nepal) is a most successful Nepalese taekwondo athlete, who holds the record for the first South Asian player to win four consecutive Gold medalist in South Asian Game. Winning Gold medals from 1999-2011, he has set a record in the history of Nepali sports as well. He won the bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games, and set the record of being first qualified male athlete in the Nepali sports history to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics and become a best player in Asian Olympics Qualification Tournaments in 2008. On 8 August 2008 at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Deepak was the flagbearer for Nepal. Before that he won bronze medal at the 2002 Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea because of that he become first Nepali player to win two consecutive medal in Asian Games. He is the taekwondo black belt 6th Dan holder as his professional qualification. He has been working and experiencing in this field for many years with successful endeavour.
Bista had a normal childhood. He was known to be a brilliant student as he was a top student during his early years of school. He passed the SLC exams from Bina Higher Secondary School in 1997. Deepak was interested in volleyball during his school days. He was a participant of Birendra Shield Inter School completion. Although, his parents were against the objective of Deepak giving most of his time to sports than school because their dream was to make him an engineer and not a sportsman. After SLC, according to his parents wish, Deepak joined I.Sc at Siddha Nath Science Campus in Mahendra Nagar. As His parent’s dream was to make him an Engineer.
After passed I.Sc in 1995 he started to play taekwondo and achieved success within two months. When he was yellow belt in 1996 he won his first Gold medal in his life in the National Taekwondo Championship held in Hetauda where he defeated Black Belt holding player. Since then, Bista has been undefeated in Normal Championship as well as in south Asian region in his whole sports life. In the same year he won two Gold medals in National Game and two Gold medals in International Game. In 1997 he won Gold medal at the 5th National Tae-kwon-do Championship held in Ilam, Nepal. He won his first South Asian Gold medal to the Nation in 8th South Asian Games (SAG) in 1999 held in Kathmandu, Nepal. Moreover, he won additional three consecutive Gold medal in 9th, 10th & 11th South Asian Games (SAG) respectively. In 2005 he won two Gold medals in Governor Cup Tae-kwon-do Championships and Players Cup Tae-kwon-do Championship which was held in USA. He got silver medals and bronze medal too but being an efficient player, he retrieved with Gold medals more.
To value his successful career, he has been awarded with numerous honour ships and titles. He got the title of Best Player Award of the Year 2003 prize by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shahadev in 2004. Likewise, Suprabal Gorkha Dakchhin Bahu (3rd) from His Majesty Late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shahadev – 1999, Subikhayat Trishathi Patta (3rd) prize by His Majesty the King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shahadev in 2003, Supradipta Birendra Prajatantra Bhaskar (3rd) prize by His Majesty the King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shahadev in 2005, SAMSUNG Blue Passion Award in Asian Olympic Qualifying Game – 2007, Nepal Sports Journalist forum (NSJF) LG Player of the Year Award – 2007, Nepal National and International Players Association (NNIPA) Player of the Year Award – 2007, Dasharath Chand Medhavi Honour – 2010, Yuba Pratibha and Khelkud Samman by Sports Ministry – 2010 are some of his honourships for his dedication. These valuable awards are received with great deal of hard working, perseverance, and Striving.
In 2011 Deepak got married with Ayasha Shakya in Kathmandu. Shakya is the taekwondo athlete who won three Gold medals in South Asian Game (SAG). In 2019 she won two Gold medals in taekwondo poomsae category in 13th South Asian Game held in Kathmandu. In 2010 she won her first Gold medal at the 11th South Asian Games held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She had won Silver medal in 10th South Asian Game at Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2006.
Being dedicated in this particular field Mr. Bista served long span of time as a professional player and got other various titles gradually from National Team Captain to National Team Coach since 1995 to till date within the country and in foreign land (France, korea, USA) as well.
There is no doubt, he is number one player till date. Deepak has got marvellous travel history within the native land and in other several countries like Malaysia, Jordan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, France, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Bahrain, South Korea, USA, Sri Lanka, Qatar, China, UAE, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Switzerland ,Germany and Malta for training, participation and for work experiences.
Mr. Deepak, a true gem of Nepali sports, is always remembered for his great contribution for uplifting the Nepalese sports and he has become a true encouragement for other players. He is affiliated with various organization and he is current coach in Nepal Army club. After dedicating his life in sports, Bista never decided to exile in foreign land, like what other player did to earn just money. Obedient to motherland, he decided to continue his contribution till the country needs him. We always wish for his welfare and want to give best of luck for his upcoming undertakings.
